From the moment I stepped off the ferry and onto Mackinac Island, I felt transported back in time. The absence of cars, replaced by horse-drawn carriages, the Victorian architecture, and the sweet aroma of freshly made fudge set the stage for my journey to The Inn at Stonecliffe—a promise of immersion in both history and modern luxury.

Originally built in 1904 as the grandest summer residence on Mackinac Island for a Chicago meat-packing baron, The Inn at Stonecliffe has undergone numerous transformations over the decades. Its latest reincarnation, a monumental $30 million renovation overseen by the Pulte Family Charitable Foundation, has elevated the estate to new heights of elegance and sophistication while preserving its rich historical legacy.

Perched atop Mackinac Island’s West Bluff, The Inn at Stonecliffe offers panoramic views of the Straits of Mackinac, creating a backdrop of unparalleled natural beauty. The estate, spanning 15 acres, now features meticulously landscaped gardens, a rejuvenated apple orchard, and even bee hives to support local biodiversity and farm-to-table initiatives.

Upon arrival, I was whisked away on a horse-drawn carriage ride through the island’s Victorian village to the Edwardian-style estate. The mansion, meticulously restored and expanded to include 16 luxurious guest rooms and the new Straits Suite, exudes a sense of timeless elegance with its updated interiors and breathtaking lake views.

New additions such as the Summer House, comprising 32 guest rooms with kitchenettes and garden vistas, cater to diverse guest preferences, whether seeking solitude or family-friendly accommodations. The introduction of three private cottages—Sunny Honey Cottage, Hill Top Cottage, and Yacht Watch Cottage—offered me additional options for a more intimate, residential-style retreat experience.

The culinary experience at The Inn at Stonecliffe is equally exceptional, featuring three distinct dining venues that celebrate locally sourced ingredients and regional flavors. The Straits restaurant tempted me with fine dining options and an outdoor patio overlooking the water, while The Backyard delighted with wood-fired pizzas and daily specials. For a casual rendezvous, Horsey’s offered craft cocktails and a relaxed atmosphere.

Events at The Inn at Stonecliffe were elevated by the new Sunset Pavilion, a 3,000-square-foot event space designed for weddings and gatherings of up to 150 guests. With floor-to-ceiling windows framing picturesque views and a spacious patio for al fresco celebrations, the Sunset Pavilion ensured unforgettable moments against the backdrop of Mackinac’s stunning landscapes.

Beyond its physical enhancements, The Inn at Stonecliffe stands out as a beacon of philanthropy under the stewardship of the Pulte Family Charitable Foundation. All net profits from the resort are channeled into charitable initiatives aimed at supporting disadvantaged communities locally and globally, reflecting a commitment to social responsibility that extends the legacy of its late founder, Bill Pulte.

My days at The Inn at Stonecliffe were filled with exploration and relaxation. Mornings began with leisurely walks through the estate’s gardens, where the scent of blooming flowers mingled with the crisp island air. I often found myself drawn to the newly landscaped garden grove in front of the mansion, adorned with hammocks that offered a serene spot for reading or simply soaking in the tranquility of Mackinac Island.

One of the highlights of my stay was the opportunity to indulge in farm-to-table dining experiences. The outdoor BBQ pavilion, complete with an Italian wood-fired pizza oven, smoker, spit, and grill, showcased the island’s culinary delights. Each meal was a celebration of local flavors, accompanied by breathtaking views of the Straits of Mackinac that stretched out before me.

The resort’s commitment to sustainability and environmental stewardship was evident throughout my visit. I learned about the ongoing efforts to plant hundreds of trees in the gardens and on the grounds, enhancing both the natural beauty of the estate and its ecological footprint. The addition of beehives in the orchards underscored The Inn at Stonecliffe’s dedication to supporting local biodiversity and sustainability initiatives.

In addition to its natural beauty and luxurious accommodations, The Inn at Stonecliffe offered a range of recreational activities to suit every preference. Whether I was lounging by the family-friendly pool, retreating to the adults-only pool and cabanas for a moment of tranquility, or exploring the island on a rented bike from the resort’s Bike Pavilion, there was always something new to discover and enjoy.

I often found myself drawn to the Sunset Pavilion for sunset cocktails, where the panoramic views of Mackinac Bridge and the Straits provided a stunning backdrop for socializing with fellow guests. The evenings concluded with stargazing by the firepits on the Straits Lawn, where the sound of waves lapping against the shore added a soothing soundtrack to the night.
