The Getaway

Once the luggage is unpacked from the trip taken to celebrate the New Year, the reality of gray January days sets in and there’s really only one thing to do—plan another getaway and pick up some fabulous new items from the resort collections.

Resort has grown in influence over the years, evolving from capsule collections for cruise aficionados or those who wintered away to a great under-the-radar time to pick up some new favorites.

Of course, if you’re wintering away, you get to show them off first.

Similar to designers’ pre-fall collections, which we’re starting to see now, the smaller deliveries are where to find the sleeper stars of a wardrobe.

Resort can be a spot to try a trend—this year the options ranged from Modern Prairie to a haute take on rave gear. Yet it’s also a reliable source for forever favorites like dots, stripes, tie-dye and ruffles.

Cruise collections—with their built-in associations to travel—lend themselves well to being shown outside the usual fashion capitals. Chanel has presented in Dallas, Seoul and Korea, and this year’s was shown in and inspired by Havana, Cuba. For the 2018 show, the label returns to Paris. Louis Vuitton will take their show on the road to Tokyo, after staging this year’s looks in Rio de Janeiro.

Exotic locales, endless inspiration and looks that resonate with the loveliest and most enduring design details—there’s nothing not to love about resort.
