When the new Chicago Antiques + Art + Design Show opens on May 18, it will be welcomed enthusiastically by the many collectors who have sorely missed an annual spring antiques fair at the Merchandise Mart.

There will again be a four-day opportunity to view—and purchase—fine objects from throughout the nation and the world, with a three day weekend show and festive opening night  all back in their natural habitat, the Mart’s seventh floor exhibition space, from May 18-21.

The Thursday night opening party will offer cocktails, hors d’oeuvres, live music and the opportunity to shop the show early. This year’s preview evening will benefit the Illinois Executive Mansion Association, with Former Governor James H. Thompson as Honorary Chair.

The Illinois Executive Mansion Association, a private, non-profit charitable corporation, was created in 1972 to oversee and preserve the People’s House for future generations. Preview tickets include a show catalog and return entry throughout the following three days.

Below is a virtual glimpse of several representative items from this year’s enticements, including, toward the end, a few on every woman’s dream list. And then there is the real Hamilton—not merely on stage but to have and to hold in one’s own library.

Trinity House of London, The Cotswolds and New York, showing Les Trois Graces by Pablo Picasso, pen and ink on paper, circa 1923.

From Philip Chasen Antiques of East Norwich NY, a Tiffany Studios 16 inch Belted Dogwood table lamp, circa 1905.

An offering from Ophir Gallery, Englewood NJ, a Tiffany Favrile Nasturtium Carved Cameo Vase, by Tiffany Studios, circa 1908.

Map of North America by Tommaso Porcacchi in Venice, circa 1572-1620, from Charles Edwin Puckett of Akron OH.

M. S.  Rau Antiques of New Orleans will offer In the Sails, oil on canvas by John Steven Dews.

A vintage set of six Piero Fornasetti Pattern Plates from Earle Vandekar of Knightsbridge, Inc., Maryknoll NY.

M. S. Rau Antiques of New Orleans will offer this Thomas Chippendale Pembroke Table, circa 1775.

From Toj Gallery, Annapolis MD, a set of Boch Freres Catteau vases.

Is there a woman alive who would not kill for the next three items?

From Only Authentics, of New York NY, a vintage Hermes Orange Ostrich Birkin Bag.

A pair of Cartier earrings from Nally Jewels, New York NY.

A 35 carat Burma Sapphire Ring from M.S. Rau Antiques, New Orleans LA.

And, as for the finale: The somewhat erotic handwritten letter from A. Hamilton to Eliza Schuyler in 1780 is merely a teaser for the astonishing Alexander Hamilton Collection.

From Seth Kaller, Inc., White Plains NY, the Alexander Hamilton Collection, a gathering of highly important original letters, documents and imprints.
