When autumn began its spectacular show in Chicago, I knew it was time for a proper fall getaway. With my Italian Greyhound, Boomer, tucked into his travel carrier, I headed east to Manhattan for what would become the most perfectly curated weekend escape. The Shelburne Sonesta in Murray Hill proved to be exactly what this discerning Chicagoan needed—a sophisticated sanctuary that understood both luxury and the art of traveling with a beloved four-legged companion.

Standard Room at the Sonesta
From the moment we arrived, I understood why this boutique hotel has garnered such a devoted following. Our spacious room featured those magnificent floor-to-ceiling windows that framed Manhattan’s autumn spectacle beautifully. Boomer immediately claimed the sunny spot by the window, while I marveled at how the golden September light transformed the city into something almost magical. The hotel’s thoughtful pet amenities—from the PAWS Welcome Letter and complimentary dog treats to the provided water dish, feeding bowl, and waterproof mat—made it clear that Boomer was just as welcome as I was.

We started each morning with coffee and the paper in our sun-drenched room, ventured out to explore literary treasures and fashion discoveries, enjoyed afternoon spa treatments (while Boomer enjoyed his complimentary pet bed), then ended our days with cocktails and city views as autumn light faded into Manhattan’s glittering evening. This was New York at its most sophisticated—unhurried, thoughtful, and utterly unforgettable. Even Boomer seemed to understand we’d discovered something special.
Culinary Discoveries That Warmed the Soul
The Sonesta’s prime Murray Hill location delivered immediate access to dining experiences that reminded me why New York remains America’s culinary capital. Take Care, the intimate neighborhood bistro just steps from our door, became our first revelation. Their elevated comfort food felt like the sophisticated cousin of Chicago’s hearty fare—thoughtful, seasonal, and utterly satisfying on a crisp late September morning. The autumn menu celebrated the season with dishes showcasing ingredients at their peak, each bite reinforcing why New Yorkers are so passionate about their neighborhood gems.

But it was Vintage Green, the hotel’s own rooftop restaurant, that truly stole the show. This plant-forward dining experience transformed vegetables into genuine works of art, with presentations so stunning I found myself photographing nearly every course. Their fall harvest menu, featuring roasted root vegetables and creative grain bowls, provided the perfect backdrop for watching the sunset paint Manhattan’s skyline in those impossible autumn hues. And yes, Boomer enjoyed his own special dining experience with the Bark Bites in-room menu curated by Take Care Bistro—because luxury should extend to every member of the family.

Spa Nalai: Parisian Indulgence in Manhattan
Between our city explorations, I discovered pure bliss at Spa Nalai, the exclusive KOS PARIS spa—New York’s first and only location. The experience felt like stepping into a serene Parisian sanctuary, where every detail was meticulously crafted to engage the senses. The personalized treatment I received was transformative, offering that perfect blend of sophistication, serenity, and ultimate refinement that made me forget I was in the heart of bustling Manhattan.

The spa’s two treatment suites, beautifully appointed relaxation lounge, and exceptional amenities created an atmosphere where time seemed to slow down. After a morning of city exploration with Boomer, surrendering to the expert hands of Spa Nalai’s therapists while Manhattan’s energy hummed quietly in the distance felt like the ultimate luxury.
Three Madison Avenue Treasures
No Manhattan weekend would be complete without discovering the independent boutiques that give this city its incomparable character. I found three absolute gems, all conveniently located along Madison Avenue’s luxury corridor.
Argosy Book Store became my first obsession. Located at 116 East 59th Street, this six-story townhouse has been New York City’s oldest independent bookstore since 1925, still lovingly run by the original owner’s third-generation family. Walking through those creaky wooden floors felt more like exploring a private library than shopping. I spent an enchanted hour among rare first editions by Mark Twain, William Faulkner, and Emily Dickinson, alongside antique maps and historical manuscripts that seemed to whisper stories of nearly a century of New York’s intellectual life. Their specialization in Americana, autographs, and historical documents made it impossible to leave empty-handed.

Blue Tree on Madison Avenue embodied everything I’d hoped to find in a New York boutique. Former actress Phoebe Cates created this “general store,” and her philosophy that “there are no rules” was evident in every corner. I discovered the most unexpected treasures: vintage LPs next to contemporary jewelry, rare art books alongside cashmere scarves, and chocolates displayed near genuine diamonds. Cates’ distinctive eye for the beautiful and unusual created those serendipitous shopping moments that make Manhattan so magical—I left with a stunning piece of jewelry that I know I’ll never find anywhere else.

La Boutique Resale proved that sustainable luxury shopping is an art form. Housed in the former Encore Resale location, this two-floor haven represents America’s oldest consignment shop, dealing in high-end designer goods since 1954. The 3,200 square feet of carefully curated treasures lived up to fashion insiders’ descriptions of being “extremely well priced and well curated—think 2000s Dolce meets one-of-a-kind Moschino.” Every piece was hand-picked for pristine condition and current relevance, explaining why celebrities, models, and fashionistas make this their go-to destination. I found a stunning Etro piece that felt like it was waiting specifically for me.

These three Madison Avenue stops created the perfect luxury shopping trail that complemented our weekend beautifully: literary history at Argosy, eclectic luxury at Blue Tree, and designer vintage treasures at La Boutique Resale. Each reflected the independent spirit that makes Manhattan shopping so rewarding—far from predictable chain stores, these boutiques captured the personalities and passions of their owners.
Between the Shelburne’s genuinely attentive service, our thoughtfully appointed accommodations, and the exceptional dining, my Italian greyhound, Boomer, and I found everything we needed for a memorable fall getaway. What struck me most about this boutique hotel was how effortlessly it balanced sophistication with warmth—from the staff who remembered Boomer’s name by the end of our first night, to the impeccable housekeeping that somehow made our room feel more luxurious each time we returned. The hotel’s Murray Hill location proved perfect for accessing Manhattan’s best while maintaining that sense of refined retreat. The combination of boutique luxury, culinary excellence, and those thoughtful touches that made both pet and owner feel genuinely welcomed created an authentically New York weekend that captured autumn’s magic from street level to sky-high.
