A Kingdom in the Laurel Highlands: Discovering Nemacolin
Where 18th-century Parisian grandeur meets the untamed Alleghenies — and every indulgence is yours for the asking
FARMINGTON, Pa. — Driving through the winding roads of Pennsylvania’s Laurel Highlands, one hardly expects to find a French château rising from the Allegheny Mountains. Yet there it stands: The Chateau at Nemacolin, its grand porte cochère and towering façade looking as though it were transported directly from 18th-century Versailles rather than built in rural Fayette County.
The Chateau opened in 1997 to celebrate the 10-year anniversary of the resort, but despite its relative youth, it possesses the gravitas of something far older. Guest rooms and suites draw their design influence directly from the Ritz Paris in France, and that inspiration permeates every detail, from the crystal chandeliers cascading overhead to the veined marble underfoot.
Nemacolin’s story begins not with European grandeur but with American industry. In 1968, Pittsburgh industrialist Willard Rockwell established a private game reserve here called Nemacolin Trails Hunting Reserve, named for Chief Nemacolin, a Delaware Indian who blazed trails through these mountains in 1740. By the end of the 1970s, the property had evolved into the Nemacolin Inn, drawing Hollywood celebrities like Phyllis Diller, Milton Berle and Eva Gabor.
The transformation into today’s 2,200-acre luxury destination came in 1987, when Joseph Hardy III, the billionaire founder of 84 Lumber, purchased the property. Originally, Hardy bought the location so his daughter Maggie could have a quiet place to fish. Instead, the family invested millions, adding championship golf courses, world-class dining and eventually The Chateau itself.
Arriving at the property, I understood immediately why Nemacolin has earned its reputation. Guests arrive through a grandiose porte cochère where first-class, white-glove service welcomes them, and luggage is promptly transported to accommodations. The lobby captivates instantly with extravagant appointments of crystal, veined marble and velvet.
The butler service transcends anything I’ve encountered at luxury properties worldwide. These aren’t concierges — they’re personal attendants who will draw a warm bubble bath to your exact specifications. Guests choose from six themed bath experiences: Warming Mandarin, Euphoric Calm, Soothing Fresh Melon, Energizing Oolong, or Calming Sun. On my second morning I selected the latter — rose petals scattered everywhere, a soothing scent enveloping the room, and water so impossibly soft it felt like silk against the skin. And yes, if you want rubber ducks, they’ll provide those too.
At bedtime, guests choose from six pillow options varying in softness and firmness, with scented varieties including CBD-infused pillows that transformed my dreams into heavenly bliss. While The Chateau’s décor remains classically French, every modern comfort has been thoughtfully integrated. The bathrooms feature state-of-the-art toilets with heated seats, automatic lids, built-in scent diffusers and bidet functions — that heated seat quickly became my favorite amenity. During turndown service, warm cookies arrive at your door, and each morning the butler delivers coffee service with fresh juice and anything else to make your morning perfect.
The rooms and suites feature inviting baths with soaking tubs, marble details and elegant chandeliers. The classical décor creates ornate rooms with vaulted ceilings that make every suite feel grand and majestic.
A Sanctuary for Body and Soul
Beyond the château’s opulent walls lies Nemacolin’s commitment to wellness — and it begins in the most unexpected of places. My morning yoga class took place in Reflections, a floor-to-ceiling windowed art gallery where natural light pours across the space and curated works surround you mid-pose. The instructor brought infectious enthusiasm, guiding a class perfectly calibrated for all levels, leaving me centered and energized for the day ahead.
From there, I made my way to the Woodlands Spa, stopping first at the state-of-the-art fitness center for a quick workout before my treatment. The spa itself is stunning — a sanctuary of calm where every detail has been considered. I indulged in the Diamond Decadence facial, a 90-minute treatment that eased me into a state of profound tranquility and bliss. The result was immediate: glowing skin that felt deeply hydrated and refreshed, as though the mountains themselves had worked their restorative magic.
Afterward came perhaps the most sublime moment of all. In the Fireside Lounge, I sank into a plush chaise longue and was blanketed under soft faux fur throws. A tray arrived bearing fresh salad and green tea — the perfect light lunch to preserve that post-treatment serenity. Flames flickered nearby as I lingered, unwilling to break the spell.
Parisian Elegance at Every Turn
Each morning I started the day at La Pâtisserie with a flaky croissant and a healthy smoothie — simple pleasures elevated by impeccable quality. But the true transport to Paris came that afternoon with high tea in the Bleu Room. The space is a confection of Tiffany blue, from the wall coverings adorned with oversized bows to the dramatic ceilings and sumptuous upholstered furniture. Seated there with tiered trays of delicacies before me, I was reminded unmistakably of the Ritz in Paris — which is, of course, precisely the point.
Evenings of Indulgence
As twilight settled over the mountains, dinner beckoned at Fawn & Fable, located in The Grand Lodge just steps from The Chateau. The Grand Lodge offers an entirely different aesthetic — a celebration of Nemacolin’s heritage with warm, rustic elegance. The evening began with a buttery, impossibly tender filet mignon, accompanied by gratin mac and cheese so rich it bordered on sinful, alongside crisp broccolini. Dessert demanded equal commitment: a classic crème brûlée with its shattering caramelized crust followed by a decadent chocolate cake that left no room for restraint.
The night concluded with a tour of Nemacolin’s legendary wine cellar, located below the Circle Bar where I savored a glass of port — the perfect digestif to close an evening of indulgence.
Another evening brought dinner at Aqueous, the seafood restaurant nestled within Falling Rock — a boutique hotel perched above the championship golf course with an aesthetic influenced by the organic architecture of Frank Lloyd Wright. Here, modern cuisine inspired by the sea arrives in a graceful atmosphere of clean lines and natural materials. The salmon was extraordinary: a perfectly seared fillet with crisp, golden skin giving way to flesh so delicate it practically melted on the tongue, accompanied by seasonal vegetables that sang of freshness.
Yet another evening brought dinner at Gusto, the resort’s celebrated Italian restaurant. Fresh, local ingredients bring Gusto’s Italian cuisine to life, including wood-fired pizzas, freshly made pastas and delicious desserts served in a comfortably casual setting. The restaurant features freshly handmade pasta and a stone oven for fresh pizza. For those seeking entertainment beyond dining, the on-property bowling alley offers a playful counterpoint to the château’s grandeur — proof that Nemacolin understands luxury need not always be serious.
Adventures for All Ages
Nemacolin is as much a family destination as it is a romantic retreat. The children’s programming is exceptional, with the reimagined Kids Club offering supervised activities that keep young ones entertained for hours. I even joined in the fun myself, participating in a candle-making class in the kids’ art studio — a surprisingly meditative experience that resulted in a fragrant souvenir of the Laurel Highlands.
Wildlife Adventures takes family entertainment to another level entirely. Home to over 200 animals from around the globe, this USDA-licensed facility offers interactive education and live animal programs that thrill children and adults alike. Guests can explore the wildlife habitats by bike or on foot, spotting Bengal tigers, African lions, wolves, buffalo, and silver foxes along wooded trails. Guided Wildlife Tours led by expert keepers provide up-close encounters with majestic big cats, complete with feeding demonstrations and fascinating conservation insights. For younger children, Billy Goat Mountain offers the Furry Farm Friends Meet & Greet, where little ones can pet and feed gentle sheep, playful goats, and a friendly donkey.
The Art of Living Well
The activities here are endless. Since the early 1980s, the Hardy family has continuously expanded their collection, curating a dynamic assembly of more than 1,000 fine paintings, sculptures, antiques, glassworks, cars, planes and historical artifacts — all displayed throughout the resort for guests to enjoy. Highlights include works by Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, Fernando Botero, Norman Rockwell and Louis Comfort Tiffany, with guided tours available to explore the collection in depth.
To conclude my stay, I visited the Holistic Healing Center — a fitting finale to days of indulgence. I began with facial rejuvenation acupuncture, designed to improve appearance by reducing fine lines and wrinkles while toning the skin. Next came whole-body cryotherapy, where guests immerse themselves in a fully enclosed, single-person cryogenic chamber for two to three minutes, aiding the body’s recovery from pain and inflammation while increasing energy levels.
Finally, I experienced NovoTHOR photobiomodulation therapy, which uses red and infrared light to feed energy to the cells, stimulating cellular regeneration, increasing blood flow and reducing inflammation — impacting the health of every cell in the body by reducing oxidative stress. I emerged feeling renewed from the inside out.
An Audacious Vision Realized
The resort includes two Pete Dye-designed championship golf courses, and in 2007, Nemacolin’s boutique hotel Falling Rock received AAA Five Diamond status.
What strikes most profoundly is the audacity of vision. In a region once defined by steel mills and coal mines, the Hardy family crafted something improbable — a resort where French château glamour at The Chateau coexists with Frank Lloyd Wright-inspired modernism at Falling Rock and warm sophistication at The Grand Lodge. The mountains remain wild beyond every window, but inside, each property offers its own distinct world of luxury, and every desire — from rose petal baths to port in the cellar, from cryotherapy to crème brûlée — is yours for the asking.
Leaving Nemacolin feels less like checking out and more like waking from a dream you desperately wish to reenter.
